Building Your Self-Esteem
Self-esteem is all about how we feel about our self and our capabilities. Self-esteem, whether it’s high, low or somewhere in between, has a huge effect on life. Our self-esteem is inculcated in us during our formative years. The continuous disapproval from family, friends, and society, would create a tendency to gradually strip us of our feelings of self-worth. Our low self-esteem disbands our self-confidence. However, these feelings do not have to be enduring. Refining our self-esteem increases our confidence and is a first step towards finding happiness and leading a better life.
An important step to initiate the process of change involves knowing whether you have low self-esteem. You may have a low self-esteem if you have continuous negative thoughts about yourself. These thoughts can revolve around a specific trait or many. It could include issues associated with your career, relationships, physical attributes, body image and so on. Therefore, it appears that if your inner voice, or thoughts about yourself, are habitually critical, you likely have a low self-esteem.
Here are 11 ways to elevate your Self-esteem:
1. Positive Self-Talk
Speak only positive things about yourself. Look in the mirror and speak out loud (just loud enough for you to hear) positive adjectives which either you have or wish to have. Believe that you have them.
2. Stop Comparing Yourself with Anybody
You just need to figure out your niche. Everyone is great at something.
3. Movement and Exercise
Exercise helps to improve your mood. Hit the gym if possible. Engage in physical activites.
4. Don’t Strive for Perfection
It’s good that you want to do things well. However do keep in mind that no one is perfect or even capable of perfection.
5. Don’t Beat Yourself up When You Make a Mistake
There is no point crying of spilt milk! Learn from the past and move on.
6. Focus on the Things You Can Change
Think about some of the things that are in your power to control; see what you can do about those.
7. Do Things You Enjoy
If you do things you enjoy, you’re more likely to think positively. Keep aside time everyday for fun and relaxation.
8. Celebrate the Small Things in Life
Celebrating the small victories is a great and completely legitimate way to feel better about yourself. After all, those little things matter!
9. Be Helpful and Considerate
Being of help to someone is a great way to boost their mood, but you might also find that you feel better about yourself after you do something particularly excellent for someone else.
10. Surround Yourself with Supportive People
Don’t hang around people who always focus on bringing you down. Find people who make you feel good about yourself and avoid those who tend to trigger your negative thinking.
11. Talk to a Counsellor
